There’s a time when we must choose to follow what we were meant to do or ignore the path God has called us to undertake. As human beings, we often choose the path that has fewer obstacles and the least resistance. Yet, we might find ourselves struggling because we might not feel fulfilled by the path we are currently on. We all have seen, heard, and experienced it at some point in our lives. Whether you choose a career based on family tradition, money, and social norms, there might be a desire that isn’t met within your soul. That desire is often referred to as fulfillment because nothing matters if you don’t feel fulfilled. You can be a wealthy business owner and still remain empty inside. You can also choose a career that’s prestigious in the eyes of society, only to realize that you loathe your job. Unfortunately, many people follow the path of comfort just to realize that they regret not taking the path they were meant to take. Furthermore, many deathbed confessions seem to depict following societal norms, just to end up regretting it in the end. As Christians, we are instructed not to fear or worry about minute details such as food, clothing, and money. Yet many Christians and unbelievers struggle with the fear of the unknown.
Hush, Rue is a great example of fearing the path that needs to be taken in order to fulfill your destiny. Throughout the story, Rue feels content with what she does because she has been working hard to become an ER doctor. Yet when she steps foot in the ER as a resident, she notices that she desires something else within the medical field. Then, an opportunity arises for her to take, but the fear of time and the unknown causes her to deny what she already knows. You might have experienced this before, but Rue continues to receive many signs and confirmations from God. Eventually, she meets Zack, a charming firefighter who takes her breath away. Convinced that he is the one, she disregards God’s calling on her life and chooses to follow the path of comfort. Rue understands that residency will end in four years, which will leave her with enough time to start a family and earn a well-deserved living. Rue also knows that choosing the path of becoming a neurosurgeon is what she is called to do, but the fear of losing valuable time causes her to feel confused.
Throughout the story, Rue experiences joy and love with Zack. She often imagines what her future will be like. Rue pictures a beautiful home, children, and a life she has always desired. Despite knowing the path she needs to undertake, she realizes that love will give her the fulfillment she has always wanted. Then, on a blissful morning, her life abruptly changes and causes her to question God. In life, we often believe that anything is replaceable, but we also fail to see the bigger picture. As Christians, we are meant to serve one another and be the light on the dark hill, but few undertake this important role. It’s easy to follow the path with least resistance because we sacrifice less and receive more. Yet the right path requires the most sacrifice in the beginning to receive the greatest blessings in the end. So what will you choose? What do you think Rue will choose?
