We all have been broken or in need of help at one point in our lives. Maybe a thought appeared in your mind about getting closer to God. Maybe you know of someone who shares a personal relationship with the Lord and is joyful even though their circumstances deem it otherwise. I used to wonder why people desired God or how they appeared to be unfazed by their troublesome circumstances. In this article, we will discuss different ways you can try that will draw you near the Lord.
- Read the Bible: This might come as a shock to some people. The reason is that some might question how reading an “ancient book” can lead you closer to God and the truth. Don’t believe me? Let me explain. Reading the Bible opens your eyes to the truth and allows you to hear the voice of God more clearly. Furthermore, reading the Bible allows you to realize that God is the definition of love. Additionally, you will read many interesting stories that will transform your mind. Captivating stories, such as a shepherd boy defeating a giant, a man who led a nation despite not being able to talk clearly, and a God who was also a man brought into this world to save everyone. The Bible is the gateway to better understanding God’s voice by reading about his character. No one knows God’s personality, but his characteristics are shown in the Bible, which will draw you near him. He is love, he is life, and he is the truth and the only way. John 14:6
- Listen to worship music: You might think that hearing Christian music can be boring, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not. Worship music is a way to connect with the Lord on a deeper level and to acknowledge him, praise him, and thank him for everything he has done in your life. All good things come from his right hand, and worshipping the Lord brings joy to the soul. I always say that Christian music is like medicine to the soul. It heals you in ways you can’t explain.
- Pray and ask him to be with you: This should have been the first thing in this article, but a few people who desire to get closer to God might not know how to pray. A few might not know the full story of Jesus Christ, which is concerning, to say the least. So you can start by talking to him like a friend, then praying and asking the Lord to guide you in this journey of fellowship with him. Open the door and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior because he is the only way to heaven. Turn away from your sins and ask that he purify, lead, and guide you. Something about praying every day gets you closer to the Lord. A strong prayer life is one way of having a relationship with the Lord by thanking him for everything he has done in your life. So go on ahead and let him know that you want him to be a part of every decision in your life, including the small ones.
- Attend church/church events: This comes as a no-brainer, but attending church is a great way to get closer to God. You must remember that you are part of the body of Christ, which means you are loved and cherished. Attending church is also a great way to connect yourself with other believers. To add to this, you are in communion with the Lord, and being together with the body of Christ will make you spiritually stronger. Another great way you can get closer to God is to join church events to meet other believers and learn about Christ. You can hear their testimonies of how Jesus improved their lives. Go to a Bible study, join a life group, join any group that glorifies God.
- Ask God for direction and purpose: Let’s be honest here. Most who want to get closer to God often need direction in their lives. We have to remember that we are lost without God, and following his will in our lives will bring us greater joy than not following his will. Ask him for direction in your life; ask him to show you a way so that he can be the center of everything in your life. Doing this will allow you to lean toward the Lord by following his word and being obedient.
These are the five top reasons on how to get closer to the Lord. Remember, there is no special way to get closer to him because there is nothing you have to do or sacrifice. Simply accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior will draw him near you. Praying and asking for guidance will draw him near you, reading your Bible will draw him near you, and attending church will draw him near you. You see what I did there? Oftentimes, we are stuck in our own little world, and we forget who’s actually knocking. Jesus is the one knocking. All we have to do now is open the door and invite him into our lives. So, what will you do? Will you open the door? Revelation 3:20.
